It is a oft made observation that human beings tend to aspire to the dominant culture. We tend to want to live as the dominant culture lives. The dominant culture in 2013 is that of the Unites States of America. This is reflected in the world wide fascination with Hollywood movies, the tendencies for people in emerging economies to embrace American dress, music, and language, the dominant share enjoyed in most countries of iconic American products like Coke, Levi and Apple. It is even reflected in the fact that the French government has had to legislate against the ‘Americanisation’ of its culture and in particular its language. Americanisms like ‘buck’, ‘grant, and ‘French fries’ are now commonplace is not just the English language, but, many languages around the world.
